Region’s Home Prices Continue to Climb: Local Values Up for 18th Straight Month
President Obama held a Town Hall meeting in Washington earlier this month on the economy. Our local CBS affiliate, Channel 9-WUSA9, published a report as a result of the meeting, and <a href="http://c.brightcove.com/services/viewer/federated_f9?isVid=1” target=”_blank”>interviewed me on the local housing market, which was broadcast May 11 and 12..
In President Obama’s meeting, it was reported that the median price for a home in our area now stands at $294,800. I provided WUSA Channel 9 current market reports for homes in Montgomery County, Arlington and Fairfax Counties, and Washington. Bruce Leshan, WUSA’s reporter, then visited representative listings to see just what you can get in the ~$295,000 price range
While home prices continue to fall across most of the U.S., prices in the DC area have increased for the 18th straight month. Last month, area home prices were up one and a half percent from one year ago.
But the increase was not universal. Prince George’s and Howard counties in Maryland and Spotsylvania and Stafford counties in Virginia continue to lag behind.
As I am quoted in the interview, we expect local homeowners to see steady, gradual, and moderate increases in values in the coming 5-10 years, similar to the market we had from 1989-1997.
